Our Committment to the Environment

Our Committment to the Environment

OUR COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT

Spike Island is committed to tackling the climate crisis by aligning our activities, values, and operations with environmental responsibility. We believe in the power of contemporary art to confront pressing social issues, including climate justice.

As a prominent arts organisation operating an 80,000-square-foot building and a vibrant creative community, we recognise our responsibility to reduce our environmental impact. Art production, exhibitions, and maintaining our facility all have significant carbon footprints. By addressing these challenges head-on, we aim to inspire others within and beyond our sector and change sustainable and environmental policies.

This statement outlines our commitment to making meaningful changes, setting ambitious targets, and supporting a sustainable future for our sector and community.

Decarbonisation and Energy Efficiency

  • Reduce our carbon footprint by 50% by 2036 and achieve Net Zero in the 2040s.
  • Retrofit our building to improve energy efficiency, reduce heat loss by 50%, and transition from natural gas to green energy solutions.
  • Self-generate energy through initiatives like Solar PV installations on our roof.

Sustainable Art Practices

  • Collaborate with artists to understand and minimise the environmental impact of art production, shipping, and display.
  • Create carbon quotas for exhibitions in 2025 and integrate sustainability into commissioning and partnership agreements.
  • Ensure at least one climate-focused event is programmed per season from 2025 onward.

Ethical Operations

  • Use green energy suppliers prioritising renewable energy generation.
  • Invest in materials and supply chains that reduce waste and promote circularity.
  • Work with climate-conscious shipping and logistics providers to minimise emissions.

Education and Advocacy

  • Empower our staff, tenants, and audiences to take climate action through education, resources, and collaborative initiatives.
  • Include environmental responsibilities in all job roles and agreements by the end of 2025.

Waste Reduction

  • Embrace reuse, recycling, and elimination of single-use materials across all activities.
  • Partner with local networks to repurpose exhibition materials and create circular solutions for waste.

OUR TARGETS

Spike Island commits to:

  • Becoming a Net Zero Carbon Organisation

Reduce our 2022-23 carbon emissions baseline by 50% by 2036 and achieve Net Zero in the 2040s.

  • Greening Our Building

Begin a phased retrofit from 2024 to 2036 to improve energy efficiency, reduce heat loss by 50%, and transition to green energy sources.

  • Tracking Progress

Record and reduce our carbon emissions annually, setting transparent benchmarks and addressing key areas of impact.

  • Switching to Green Energy

Use suppliers that actively invest in renewable energy generation.

  • Engaging with Climate Issues

Programme at least one climate-focused event per season starting in 2025 and introduce carbon quotas for exhibitions by 2026.

  • Embedding Sustainability

Include environmental responsibilities in staff roles, artist agreements, and tenant commitments by the end of 2025.

WORKING TOGETHER FOR CHANGE

This statement reflects our commitment to sustainability as central to our mission, values, and activities. By engaging our staff, artists, partners, and audiences, we aim to lead the sector in addressing the climate crisis.

Spike Island invites all members of our community to join us in this essential work. Together, we can harness the power of art to build a more sustainable future.
